For Jewish people during World War II, the violin was more than an instrument — it was a beacon of hope, a source of work and a savior. Violins that Jews played in Europe throughout the Holocaust are on display at the traveling Violins of Hope exhibit in Carnegie Mellon University’s Posner Center through Nov. 21. The exhibit is the result of five years of work by Sandy Rosen, chair of Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh.

The event, “Resonance of Hope: Building Bridges Through Music,” was organized by Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh, an educational program built around instruments owned by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust — some of the same instruments used by string players throughout the event and during Myers’ song. The performance fell on the eve of the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, a series of Nazi pogroms against Jews in Germany.

Local students to play Violins of Hope

Students from three South Hills high schools will join together to play instruments steeped in history.

“Hope in the South Hills” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Upper St. Clair High School and will showcase students from Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park and Mt. Lebanon high schools (rivals in many sports) as they present readings and perform music that captures the essence of the Holocaust.

Words have a difficult time conveying the true atrocities that were committed by Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. During the Holocaust, approximately six million Jewish people were forcibly removed from their homes, stripped of their belongings and eventually killed in numerous execution camps simply because of their religion. A powerful exhibit called “Violins of Hope” at Carnegie Mellon University’s Posner Center is using music, not words, to tell the stories of Jewish musicians during the Holocaust and celebrate the strength of those who endured this horror.

For this reason, the Violins of Hope exhibit exists – not only to help others learn about a tragic and horrific time in our world’s history, but also to commemorate the triumph of the human spirit over the atrocities of their fellow man. Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh has launched a campaign to educate the community on the Holocaust and the role that violins played in a time when even a fleeting sliver of joy seemed to be but an impossible dream.
